One in every five people in North America drinks all of their water from plastic bottles. The majority of these plastic bottles end up in landfills, adding to the environmental crises we will pass onto our children, our grandchildren and beyond.
Bottled water consumers are made to think bottled water is the “healthy choice.” Millions/billions are put into advertising to convince people to buy bottled water at a cost more than 1000 times what they would pay for water coming out of their tap. Bottled water companies like Pepsi, Coke and Nestlé make billions of dollars in profit selling water they pump from local communities.
Bottled water may be a temporary solution in times of emergency or where potable water does not exist. Some First Nations under Drinking Water Advisories rely on bottled water but this is simply a band-aid solution.
We need sustainable, long-term solutions so that everyone has clean, safe drinking water.
