The Ottawa Water Study/Action Group (OWSAG) sustained pressure on the Ottawa Municipal Council for more than a decade to promote its own safe, clean drinking water by stopping the sale of bottled water at Ottawa City Hall.
We have come together to create a coalition of committed residents to create the Ottawa we want to live in. We thank residents for supporting our campaign to end bottled water sold in single-use plastic in Ottawa, beginning with banning of commercial sales in municipal buildings. We know that this a small step when it comes to the larger challenges posed by climate change and water crises, but an important one, because it will serve as a symbol to unite us a city and as a community - one that says yes to the earth and is proud to be leading the way for a better tomorrow. San Francisco banned the sales of bottled water, serving as a leader in the United States. Imagine if Ottawa could be leading that type of change in Canada. Imagine if the residents of this city could stand proud knowing we took an active stance for the climate, for our communities, and for our families. We launched our Bottled Water Declaration so that we come together as proud residents to demand that the city bans the sale of bottled water in single-use plastic at City Hall. On June 26, Ottawa City Council passed a motion to eliminate single-uses plastics from municipal buildings. We are thrilled about this leadership but we need to hold them to account and our work is not over yet. OWSAG is partnering with blueW to increase access to drinking water in Ottawa. Learn more here.
