OWSAG co-founder and water engineer, Dr. Eric J. Schiller, recently wrote a letter to Mayor Jim Watson and Ottawa City Council. He warned, "...the use of single-use plastic containers is dangerous to our health and to the planet’s health. Highly regulated municipal tap water can change the present trend of excessive plastification. Ottawa city council can help, by promoting their own excellent water." We had a fantastic World Water Day Celebration yesterday. Youth and OWSAG members Adam Guzman-Poole and Lilia Fick coordinated a "Our Water Story" area where people were asked to share their water story. Read the inspiring and impactful messages that were shared!
OWSAG had a fantastic World Water Day Celebration yesterday! Thank you to the more than 80 people who came out for the water ceremony, talks by former councillors Diane Holmes and Clive Doucet, OWSAG co-founder Eric Schiller and youth Adam Guzman-Poole and Lilia Fick as well as singing by the Raging Grannies.
The Ottawa Citizen reported, "Clive Doucet, Diane Holmes and about 50 supporters of the Ottawa Water Study/Action Group called on the city to do a better job of promoting municipal water and reducing the amount of plastic bottles generated as waste." CBC reported, "[Diane] Holmes says tap water is routinely tested for quality, unlike unregulated bottled water, but the city does little to promote the quality product available at the nearest sink." For World Water Day, two former city Councillors, students, and water experts will be petitioning City Hall to do what other cities have done and start the removal of single use plastics from city facilities.
